Space. Autonomy. Temper.

TEMPERED II is a collaborative journal that charts the outsider mentality of backwater Australian music. Compiled and edited by Sydney music writer Max Easton (previously of Mess + Noise and Crawlspace), it offers perspective from those who have contributed to Australia’s underground music communities with a tone both loving and critical. With themes including space, gender, class, autonomy and relocation, it provides a window into what drives local underground art, and declares a space from which to improve it.

+

Contributions include:

• Feature articles by Bryony Beynon (Maximum Rock N Roll) on effectively creating new DIY spaces; Lewis Godwin (No Patience Records) on maintaining the autonomy of the underground; Alyssa Critchley on the evolution of Marrickville; and Christina Pap (Maximum Rock N Roll) on migration across punk scenes.

• Chloe Alison Escott’s exploration of the upcoming Native Cats LP; Ben Warnock on the making of 2017’s Red Red Krovvy LP; Katie Ukleja’s re-telling of the Portugal Madeira Club’s dinner service; and Max Easton on the conflicts of seeking appropriate venues.

• Interviews with Jenny Branagan of NUN (by Freya Zaknich), Dom Talarico (by Del Lumanta) and Matthew P Hopkins (by Mitchell Ryan), as well as Lena Molnar and Andrew ‘Enderie’ McLellan’s longform exploration of the myths of Brisbane music.

The journal’s written documentation is supported by photography work by Drew Bennett, Kat Cade, Robin Christian, Max Easton, David Forcier, Douglas Lance Gibson, Declan Kuch, Carmen Juarez, Sabina Rysnik, Katie Ukleja and Lucy White, all of whom give an on-the-ground glance at the people who make up the communities discussed in the journal, and the spaces they reside in.
